Thomas won his first kart title in 1998 when he was just 11, and took six strait.  At 16, he won his first regional championship -- making it back to back the next year.  To top that off, he went on to take back-to-back national titles in 2005 and 2006. 2006 and 2007 were spent racing formula cars in SCCA and the Pacific F2000, clinching a championship and Rookie of the Year award, as well as 3 track records and over 15 wins. In 2008, he made the transition to Grand Am with PR1 Motorsports, campaigning a Pontiac GXP.R in the GT class. In 2010, he made his second appearance at the 24 Hours of Daytona, in a Dinan BMW M6.

In recent years Thomas has been in a variety of endurance sports cars, and raced in the 2014 SCCA Runoffs for the Piper Race Cars factory team.  Thomas has grown to specialize in chassis setup development in conjunction with his driver coaching business, Thomas Merrill Motorsports.

Thomas has been instructing and driver coaching since 2005. He has guided his students to success in karting, formula cars, and sedans, at amateur and professional levels.

“Second to only to driving, for me, is coaching.  Helping one of my students take their game to the next level and watching them win races is one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had.”  ~Thomas Merrill

Rich was introduced to racing by his father, Gary.  He learned to work on cars in his younger years and followed in his dads footsteps through auto-x, time trials and road racing.  During this time, he met my partner, Jerry Woods, as he was both the engine builder for our 914 and 911 and a good family friend.  Rich spent one year racing midgets and won Rookie of the Year and finished in the top 10 in points, which is a big accomplishment with a vintage car.

After graduating from college in ’95, he decided not to continue an accounting career but instead became partners with Jerry to expand his established Porsche engine business – following his passion for Porsches and driving. To get back behind the wheel, he started driving a SP911, winning many races and championships from 2002 to 2007.  SP911 is a class JWE started and helped grow to a 33 car field in Northern California.

A lot of my driving over the years have been spent at the test track in a wide variety of cars: 908, 911, RSR, 934, 935, 956, GT3 Cup.  2009 - 2011, he drove for Mercer Motorsport/JWE Motorsports where they won 25-hours of Thunderhill, three years in a row: 2009 and 2010 Pirelli GT3 Champion, runner up in 2011.  Soon, he’ll be back racing with PRC in JWE's new GTL class.

When asked, he would have to say his greatest talent is engine and suspension tuning and chassis setup.  Rich’s greatest joy is helping JWE’s customers and being in the thick of it, at the track.
